How Scrabble scoring actually works
Each tile has a fixed value - E, A, I, O, N, R, T, L, S and U are worth 1, while the dangerous letters pay the rent: Q and Z score 10, J and X score 8, K scores 5. The finder sums those values for every playable word and sorts the results, so the top of the list is always your maximum-point play before board multipliers.
Two plays beat everything else in real games: the bingo (all seven tiles, +50 bonus - filter your eyes to the 7-letter rows) and premium-square placement - a modest 4-letter word with a J on a triple-letter square routinely outscores a fancy 6-letter word on empty squares. The finder gives you the raw material; the board gives you the multiplier.
Three rack habits that raise your average
- Dump the Q early. QI and QAT exist for a reason - holding the Q waiting for a U costs more points than it ever pays back.
- Keep S and blank tiles for bingos. An S is a plural hook on almost any word; spending it on a 12-point play is a waste.
- Balance vowels and consonants - a rack of AEIOUAI is nearly as dead as one with none. Aim to leave 3–4 consonants after each play.
